It is routinely referred to as ‘the hard problem’; consciousness is the one thing that even committed scientists acknowledge may never be fully explained. Yes, it’s tricky; but a model framework exists…and has existed, at least in embryo, for 2500 years. You are the Elephant defines the problem and outlines AT’s proposed ‘solution’:
There is an ancient Hindu story of blind monks attempting to describe an elephant; but what if you are the elephant?
Amazingly, a framework for a possible solution to the dilemma of consciousness is embedded in the Judeo-Christian creation story.
Thomas Nagel theorized that consciousness must extend beyond homo sapiens because ‘there must be something it is like to be a bat’. He was right…but for the wrong reason.
Much of what we do we do unconsciously. But that does not necessarily mean that we are not responsible for our actions.
Whether AI is or can become conscious is a topic of intense debate. But perhaps it doesn’t matter. Perhaps what matters is whether my Bot thinks it’s conscious.
